In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. The first telephone line was constructed in 1878. Between 1900 and 1905, the number of telephones in the network created by Bell blew past 1,000,000.

The telephone was well on its way to becoming the standard for communication all over the world. That telephone system was built on the back of a massive network of telephone and utility poles that has continued to expand over the last century and a half.
